Dean of Students

The office of the dean of students is the main authority in the college concerned with student welfare and deals with special problems (academic, personal, social and financial) which may occur during studies.

The dean works in close collaboration with the college’s administrative and academic levels, and her goal is to provide a supportive study environment.  She places herself at the disposal of students in need of counseling or help in safeguarding their privileges, in order to allow them every opportunity for success in their academic and professional training.

The dean's door is always open!

The Challenge Center ETGAR– Support and Empowerment for Students

The Challenge Center functions as part of the office of the dean of students, offering students with special learning needs a variety of support and empowerment services during the course of their academic studies. The center focuses on students with learning disabilities and/or attention disorders, and physical, sensory and cognitive disabilities, and also plays a role in assisting students of Ethiopian origin.

The center acknowledges everybody’s right to equal opportunity and embraces the belief that the college has an ethical obligation to develop its campus environment accordingly. The center proffers support, understanding and acceptance together with instruction and professional guidance to enable the students to achieve their full learning potential.

Upon referral to the center and after a personal interview and consultation, an individual support program is devised to suit each student's needs and abilities. This program is reviewed and adjusted annually and accompanies the student from his first year until completion of his studies.

The center's areas of assistance:

Study reinforcement:

Imparting constructive and efficient study methods to improve the learning process and achieve better results. The support is offered within the framework of learning strategy courses and workshops presented by college staff and/or external professionals. In addition the students may take advantage of tutoring throughout the year by high achieving senior students.

The center has integrated the use of technological aids into its programs which are applied by decision of the college's "compatibility committee" in accordance with the special needs of each and every student. Those students in need of a learning skill evaluation can undergo testing at the college's Evaluation Center.

Personal empowerment:

Personally and professionally reinforcing the student. Support is given through workshops: personal empowerment and training, personal and psychological consultation, positive thinking development, and mentoring for the student’s first ventures into academic study.

This support allows recognition and improvement of abilities and identifies impeding behavior patterns; it focuses on finding ways to circumvent and advance both personal and educational goals and bolsters self-confidence and self-belief.

Developing educational leadership:

The workshops  endeavor to empower the students through their own personal difficulties in order to transform them into leading educational personalities. The workshops focus on recognition and improvement of impeding behavior patterns by imparting personal tools to advance individual and educational goals and to improve self-confidence and self-belief.

The center also runs workshops on job searching and examination anxiety.

Financial and personal support:

We offer sustenance grants and financial assistance to eligible students for diagnostic evaluations, computers, and coupons to purchase books, study equipment and photocopying to enable them to devote themselves fully to their studies.

Financial help is awarded in accordance with the decision of the center's grants committee.

The Library

The college library was established in 1929 when the permanent college building was erected. After years of growth and expansion and changes in location the present library occupies extensive premises within the college’s original structure.

The library is a lending and reference library and serves the students, faculty and staff of the college. It contains some 250,000 volumes covering various disciplines and also Hebrew, English and Arabic periodicals.

The library also subscribes to a growing number of full text electronic books and journals. A special section offers didactic material pertaining to all areas of teaching.

The library conducts seminars and conferences on literature, writers, books and related topics.

One of the library's most significant functions is the encouragement of reading. Reading enriches our cultural world and plays an important role in the linguistic, emotional, intellectual and aesthetic development of the reader – not to speak of the pleasure that can be derived from reading a book.

Visitors to the library are fascinated and visually delighted by its exhibitions and rich art collection. The college library sees exhibitions as an excellent tool to encourage wider reading. We try to reach the viewer's heart directly through our exhibitions and to allow the library's clientele an opportunity to become acquainted with new content , encouraging them to choose books out of interest.

The Center for Children’s and Youth Literature
The purpose of the Center for Children’s and Youth Literature is to develop and promote awareness of this genre of literature, not only in the college amongst its students and teachers but also to a wider public of kindergarten and school teachers, educators, parents, librarians and literary researchers.

The Center possesses a large and interesting collection of children’s and youth literature in Hebrew and also an Arabic children's literature section.
The Hebrew collection provides an historical cross section of children's literature beginning from the 1930s and 40s down to the present day.

The Center's computerized library has catalogues organized by author, title, illustrator and subject, and writer and poet files that include newspaper articles, interviews and critiques. In addition the Center publishes bibliographic lists before holidays.

The Center's diverse activities include the following:
  • Arranging seminars on different aspects of children's literature - literary, linguistic, educational and artistic.
  • Reading instruction and encouragement for pupils of the "junior school" at the college.
Student instruction in the use of children's literature as a tool for teaching all the various  subjects.
  • Operating the Center as an information facility for the college's teachers and students and also for educators in general.

The Center's reading room is used as a classroom and workshop whenever appropriate.
