Publishing and New Publishing

Program Objectives

Digital media has introduced fundamental changes is the way that text is prepared, published and distributed. This course surveys the emergence and development of print publishing during the 20th Century and its evolution in the last two decades due to the impact of digitalization.

Participants will be introduced to current editorial practices, book marketing and promotion, digital media, hypertext, blogging tools, social network marketing, print-on-demand technology and related topics. Innovations in language tools such as corpus concordance and will also be presented.

Staff: The course will be presented by practicing publishing professionals and the faculty of the Text and Publishing Studies program at David Yellin College of Education.

Course duration and academic credit: The course will be offered 

from 17:30–19:15 over seven weeks on consecutive Thursdays starting in late December 2011. Consistent attendance and participation in the course will result in a certificate of completion and two semester course credits from David Yellin College.

Course Requirements: Regular attendance, readings, active participation and the maintenance of a study log demonstrating progress in learning.

Course Participants: This course is appropriate for writers, editors, bloggers, translators, designers, book sellers and communications professionals interested in enhancing their careers by learning about traditional and new publishing models.

Admission requirements: Candidates for admission will demonstrate competence in oral and written English and basic computer skills. An essay describing the candidate’s education, background and communications-related (writing, editing, translating) experience is required along with a personal interview.
