So You Want to Write

Objective: The goals of So You Want to Write are to imbue students with an appreciation of the creative writing process and to introduce students to the elements of creative writing: description, setting, voice, point of view, characterization and scene/narrative.

The language of instruction is English.

Format:. Weekly reading assignments of short fiction and creative nonfiction will introduce students to the multitude of options for expression in these genres. Students will engage in in-class writing exercises, keep a private journal, and develop skills in rewriting

Interested Participants: The course is open to both beginning and emerging writers.

Course Duration and Credit:

Classes will take place on Sundays from 17:45 until 19:15 and will confer two (2) annual credit hours. The course will begin in October 2012.

Admission: Application is made by forwarding your CV and an one page essay (double-spaced, 12 pt. type) stating why you want to take this course.

Instructor: Judy Labensohn holds a Master of Fine Arts in creative nonfiction from Goucher College in Maryland (2001) and an MA in English in fiction from Bar-Ilan University (2006). She has taught creative writing privately in Israel since the 1990s. Her personal essay columns appeared in The Jerusalem Post and The Nation (Israel) in the 1980s and 1990s. Longer essays and stories have appeared in top literary journals in the U.S., among them Kenyon Review, Southwest Review, Fourth Genre and Michigan Quarterly Review. Her poetry and essays have been anthologized. Since 2007 she has served as the Coordinator of the Shaindy Rudoff Graduate Program in Creative Writing at Bar-Ilan University.
